The sacred heiau (spiritual temple) is located on Kawa Bay (pronounced Kava) and is called Ke’eku Heiau. It is a laukini or temple for human sacrifice and is an ominous runin.
Suzy and I had an afternoon off from our busy bed and breakfast so we decided to do what we do best… explore this wonderful Island of Hawaii!
We packed a sandwich and drove an hour to Kawa Bay to see the Ke’eku Heiau. We walked the short mile down a gorgeous trail through the jungle with birds singing and emerged at Kawa Beach.
At one point, I turned to Suzy and said, “I can’t believe this is work”. We both grinned.
We were very careful not to climb on or enter the heiau so as to respect the dead, and Hawaiian culture and people.
