Akaka Falls

Akaka Falls State Park is one of the Big Island's most spectacular natural attractions, home to the magnificent Akaka Falls — a dramatic 442-foot single-drop waterfall that plunges into a mist-filled gorge surrounded by lush tropical rainforest. The sheer scale and raw beauty of the falls make it a must-see for any visitor to the island, and the misty air and vibrant green canopy create an almost otherworldly atmosphere that feels truly Hawaiian at its heart. It's easy to see why this is considered one of the most photographed spots on the entire island. Guests staying at Ala Kai will find Akaka Falls to be a wonderfully accessible day trip from the property. The park features a well-maintained, paved loop trail of approximately 0.4 miles that winds through a jungle of bamboo groves, wild ginger, heliconia, and fragrant orchids. Along the way, you'll also pass the smaller but still beautiful Kahuna Falls before the trail reveals the stunning climax — a full view of Akaka Falls framed by emerald cliffs. The loop is relatively easy and suitable for most fitness levels, though the path can be slippery when wet, so sturdy footwear is recommended. The park opens early, so arriving in the morning is ideal — the light is softer for photos and crowds are thinner before tour buses arrive mid-morning. Bring insect repellent, a light rain jacket, and water, as the rainforest environment means showers can appear without much warning. Admission is charged per vehicle and is very affordable. There are restrooms and a small parking area at the trailhead. The drive itself through the scenic Hamakua Coast countryside is a treat, with sweeping ocean views and charming small towns along the way.
